Helpful Tips Before Coming To The Landfill
There are special areas at the landfill where certain materials are to be placed. Metal, appliances, tires, electronics and yardwaste are to be placed in their designated areas.
REFRIGERATORS & FREEZERS:
Appliances should be empty of food when they come for disposal. However, occasionally a freezer may stop working and is full of spoiled food. If that is the case, you must advise the scalehouse and you will be directed to the area to dispose of the food before the appliance can be accepted.
BRUSH/LEAVES/TREES/LIMBS:
Leaves in paper bags are accepted. Leaves in plastic bags must be emptied at the disposal site and the bags taken with you. You do not need to bundle brush or tree limbs and they may be any length. SDCLA will grind the yardwaste annually to use as mulch and erosion control at the landfill site.
*PLEASE ENSURE NO GARBAGE, PLASTIC BAGS, and/or DEBRIS IS LEFT IN THE BRUSH PILE*
If you have a mixed load that includes yardwaste and other debris, advise the scalehouse prior to dumping and you will be directed accordingly.
SECURED LOADS
At the South Dallas County Landfill, the term "SECURED" means loads must be secured in a manner that no debris in the load could have been lost along your route to the landfill. (Driving slowly does not qualify as secured nor does "living in town".) Whether using a tarp, straps or some other method, you may not litter along the roadway. This is strictly enforced and fines will be assessed by the landfill as well as the Iowa DNR, DOT and Local Authorities.
